Leaving Edinburgh, at a prearranged time in the late afternoon/early evening, we travel over the Southern Uplands to the Gatehouse of Fleet on the unspoilt coastline of south west Scotland . There we view the enigmatic markings as we explore the rocks on Trusty Hill. Who was inhabiting this hill in the millennia before Christ? Is this the last vestiges of the Picts before they were driven further north?

We stay at Cairnholy Guesthouse, which has one of the most fortunate locations for a B&B in Scotland, located in the lee of a prehistoric burial chamber (cairn). Its owners are proud of the heritage that surrounds them, and can tell you of many more ancient monuments in the vicinity, including ones they are still investigating!

The next day, after an appetizing and hearty breakfast, we set off for St Ninian's Cave, where the missionary traditionally spent his hours in prayer and solitude. The walk through the woods to the beach is magical.

We then wind our way back to Whithorn along the coast, stopping if interested in the traditional book town of Wigtown, where most of the small shops double up or specialise as bookshops!

The museum next to the ruined church at Whithorn displays many examples of early Christian stone crosses and evidence of an important archaeological dig that highlights an earlier seventh century church on the site, close to St Ninian's original site. Time permitting we also see the site of an early chapel belonging to St Ninian on a local headland, or more standing stones as you prefer.

An evening meal can be had locally before returning to the guesthouse and Jackie will collect you after your meal. We remain in Cairnholy Guesthouse for another night, leaving for Edinburgh after another delicious breakfast. If we have not visited Trusty Hill on the outward journey we can visit it now on the return journey - the itinerary is flexible according to preferred travel times.
