Frequently Asked Questions

Booking FAQs

WHAT IF I WANT A PARTICULAR TOUR AND THE DAY IS ALREADY BOOKED FOR ANOTHER TOUR?
All the following trails are offered by Celtic Trails on a first come first served basis. In addition, Ivor my co-guide is fully trained to lead the more popular trails so often we can accommodate additional requests. You are also welcome to join the trail currently booked as the historical content of the trails overlap to some degree. The trails are unique due to the degree of cultural knowledge they contain so really any tour you book will be interesting.

WHAT IF I AM TRAVELLING ALONE AND WISH TO BOOK A TRAIL?
The surcharge is normally to cover the minimum of four people minus any excess entrance charges. However, for those booking solo tours this can be reduced further. You also have the option to withdraw at any time up to the day before travel, where we will contact you at your hotel etc should no-one else book the same tour.

WHAT IF I WANT A PRIVATE TOUR? This can be arranged at a small premium

CAN I CHOOSE ANY TOUR ANY DAY?
Certainly, as days are booked according to demand - if the day is available still, then your booking is accepted

I DO NOT KNOW SCOTLAND WELL - CAN YOU HELP ME PLAN MY TRIP?
On any trail of at least one day duration we can find some time to personally advise you with a map where to go, but advanced detailed help with planning your trip has to be charged for due to pressures of time.

CAN I STAY IN ROSLIN VILLAGE SO WE CAN START THE TOUR FROM THERE?
Jackie has been asked by various people for help with finding the scarce accommodation in Roslin, so if you are wanting help e-mail Jackie who will arrange it for you provided you submit your credit card details on the booking page to reserve your rooms.

I DO NOT SPEAK ENGLISH VERY WELL - HOW CAN I JOIN THESE TRAILS?
We can book Spanish interpreters at a favourable rate  - these are trainee interpreters that may be hired for the excellent value of £11 an hour. Other languages m ay be more expensive according to availability.

DISABLED - DO YOU HAVE FACILITIES FOR ME TO JOIN?
In the past we have had people in wheelchairs that fold up for transport, but all lifting has to be done by those accompanying them as we are not trained to lift heavy objects in and out of our side door. The visually impaired could manage the trails if they are confident on uneven ground at times.

On the day FAQs

WHEN DO WE START AND END?
Full days start at 9:30 am. ~ return to Edinburgh between 5:00 & 6:00 pm. -
Half days start at either 9:30 am or 2:00 pm and return respectively at around 1:00 pm. or 5:30 pm

WHERE DO WE MEET?
Depending on the location of your hotel and number booking the tour, either directly from your hotel or as arranged when booking

IF WE HAVE OUR OWN CAR, WHERE DO WE MEET?
If you are booking a Rosslyn tour I will meet you in the car park adjacent to the chapel - if you are booking a full day tour we can meet at a private address in Edinburgh you will be sent by e-mail.

IS THERE ANYWHERE TO STORE LUGGAGE FOR THE DAY?

If you are on a  trail starting out at the residence above you may store your luggage at  that address.

WHAT VEHICLE DO WE TRAVEL IN?
Usually a comfortable people carrier (we have two fully insured carriers for 7 passengers). If the group is larger than 7, a minibus and separate driver is available in addition to the guide. If you are travelling with your own coach, Jackie can accompany you as your guide.

WHERE DO WE EAT LUNCH?
Lunch venues offer charm, good food and excellent value for money

WHAT DO WE WEAR?
Bring waterproof clothing for a full day, and wear stout walking shoes with a decent sole grip

ARE THERE ANY DIFFICULT PARTS TO WALK?
The path down Roslin Glen is narrow and steep in parts - it can be muddy and slippery at times, in which case we can do a detour if you prefer. The trail featuring Traprain Law is definitely steep to climb, but on a grassy path all the way.

HOW LONG ARE THE WALKS?
Short rambles can be incorporated into the day in order to see nature at its best, and in general walks are brief and stretch the legs rather than compete with a work-out! The walking is a little vigorous down Roslin Glen though. Please remember that the itinerary is flexible and can accommodate personal needs [e.g. fitness] CAN I SKIP THE WALK AS I AM NOT ABLE/KEEN TO PARTAKE?Walks can be curtailed and we arrange to meet you back at a base where you will be comfortable for the short while we are away, or the whole party may agree to curtail the walk

BUT I WANT A LONG WALK!
You can specify this when booking and if your party is the only one booking that is fine - otherwise we have to go at a pace everyone can manage- also you can book a walking trail (see castle walking trail under Special Interest category for details)

HOW WELL KNOWN ARE THE SITES WE VISIT?
The beauty of such a trail is that while some are well known others are hidden gems that connect to the main site(s). This is what helps make it a unique tour, and even local historians and other locals have been pleasantly
